Artist Statement:
Magazine Portrait is a great way to recycle magazines. I think it makes the art that much more amazing when you can create something out of material that once was extremely irrelevant. As I began to sketch my portrait on the mat board, I focused a lot on the details. Looking back, I could of skipped many of the details in my sketch to save time. Next, I began to find pages in the magazines that matched the colors in my picture. I started with the American Flag because I found it the safest. The hardest part, by far, in the entire project was the chest area, along with the ear and the arm. The foot and the shoe were time consuming but not to difficult. I was stuck on the chest piece for three days straight. It was driving me nuts! Finally I collaged over that whole part with yellow, as you can see above, for a fresh start. Overall I am pleased with my work and I enjoyed the project. I am really considering doing one in my free time. I love the concept and the process in fun. I also learned discipline with this project because if you begin to waste time you become complacent, and in the end you sacrifice a good project because you just want to be done. I wont make that mistake again.
