Butterfield's Shoes
Artist Statement
This project was the first i've done like it. I have trouble with anything that crawls, so going out in the woods to pick materials was new! On my first trip out I got a little of everything, sticks, leaves, straw, etc, because I wasn't exactly sure how I was going to build my combat boot. Once I saw my classmates start building I started to understand a little more about how I could make it work. Some of my classmates, like Mariah chose to use all plants, which gave her shoe a different look, an pretty much all the boys used sticks and almost no plants. With my design I was somewhere in between. I learned how to split a large log of wood, "old school style" (no drill), for the base of my shoe. Then I began to add small branches that had leaves so I could take up space and not have a shoe that would fall apart. Once I figured out the direction I was going it was just repeating that over and over again. I was going to add embellishments, but I chose to leave it and make it look more natural. Pretty fun project overall.
